Overview

Development of an effective vaccine is considered the cornerstone for controlling a global influenza pandemic. First the bad news: Experts say the best-case scenario at present is that once a pandemic flu strain appears, it will take at least 4 to 6 months to develop a vaccine. The major obstacles to producing an adequate vaccine supply during a pandemic include these:

  • Limited production capacity
  • Production capability in only a few countries, which will yield an inequitable distribution
  • Technological challenges to vaccine development

The good news is that research into an H5N1 vaccine has been ongoing for the past decade. There has been progress and there have been setbacks. We invite you to read the in-depth article "The pandemic vaccine puzzle: Can we vaccinate enough people in time to matter?" published by CIDRAP Nov 15, 2007, which details this important work.
